ATX flying squad takes flight for the third week! We set off at 10:15 sharp in the opposite direction we normally go. We had a hard time deciding if we wanted to cross the river one way… or another. We decided that the bridge across the river was better than walking all the way around on the bike trail, this time. We made our way down Barton Springs, taking note of the places for burgers and all about Austin’s favorite soft serve at Sandy’s!

We made our way to Butler Park, and instantly ran towards the swings. The swings took up more time than one might think they would, it was pretty enjoyable! At this point, one of our squad mates met with us a little late.

Squad was discussing moving to another location, but one flyer really wasn’t interested in that plan. We were left with a dilemma… so we sat, gave it some space, and then talked through what some alternatives could be. We came up with some compromise ideas, and ultimately, decided to shift towards another idea and come back to this plan on another day.

The group decided that they wanted to move to another part of the park and play Sandman. Everyone was already familiar with the rules, so they set off while instigator, Meghan, looked after all of their bags and skateboard.

The squad hung out on a big spider web-like structure for nearly an hour before returning to their belongings and discussing lunch.

We made our way to Riverside, then crossed back over into the city. One of our squad members really wanted P Terry’s for lunch, so we walked about 15 minutes to get to that spot. We started to notice things that we had seen over the last few weeks and recognized where we were! After a couple people grabbed lunch, we all found a spot on Congress with public seating and ate the lunches we either bought, or brought.

We started to think about how we wanted to spend the rest of our afternoon, because we’d walked so much -  but dollar dares came up again!

These are such a fun way to engage with a community, and be silly, and invite adults to be silly with us! We got people to sing with us from our favorite childhood Disney Channel shows, and introduced ourselves with proper salutations!

We decided we wanted to find a place to park for the rest of the afternoon, we were pretty tired. So we made our way to a rooftop for the last 45 minutes of our afternoon. While we hung around, a couple of flyers had interactions with the public that prompted some conversations about humanity, power dynamics, and safety. Before we knew it, it was time to go meet with parents. Instigator, Meghan checked in with parents about the way our afternoon ended and we lingered and chatted for a bit before all heading opposite ways. Until next week…
